Norway's 89-year-old King Harald, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, was reported to have experienced a decline in health while receiving treatment for haemolytic anaemia and a bacterial infection.

Norway’s King Harald, 89, was said to have experienced a decline in his condition over the weekend while in Oslo University Hospital, according to a statement from the royal household. The monarch is being treated for haemolytic anaemia, a disorder that destroys red blood cells and can cause fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath and paleness. He is also receiving antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood and has responded to the treatment, the palace added, noting that his condition is now stable.

Harald was admitted on Monday for fluid retention linked to cortisone therapy and was placed on a two-week sick leave. He cancelled a scheduled visit to the Trøndelag region on September 1-2, which would have followed the leave period. Relatives who visited him on Sunday included Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the king’s sister, according to a Norwegian newspaper.

Crown Prince Haakon is acting as regent during the king’s absence. Harald, who ascended the throne in 1991, has previously undergone pacemaker implantation and reduced his official duties due to health concerns. He was also hospitalized earlier this year with an infection and dehydration while on a private trip to Tenerife.

Despite ongoing health issues, the king has affirmed that he does not intend to abdicate, citing his lifelong oath before parliament.
