UK Prime Minister Burnham to Visit Kyiv, Reaffirm Support Amid Rising Tensions

Resumen

Prime Minister Andy Burnham will travel to Kyiv for Ukraine's independence day, meeting allies and pledging continued British backing as Russia escalates attacks.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham will make his first overseas trip as head of government to Kyiv on Monday, marking Ukraine's 35th independence day and reaffirming the United Kingdom's support for Kyiv. During the visit he will chair a meeting of the "coalition of the willing," a partnership established by the UK and France, receive an award on behalf of the British people, and take part in independence day ceremonies.

Burnham said the UK remains committed to Ukraine's security, stating, "On Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes. I am proud of the contribution our country has made to Ukraine and I want the Ukrainian people to hear it directly from me that our support will not waver. After all, Ukraine's security is our security."

He added that the friendship between the two nations would endure beyond the conflict, and warned that Russia should not expect a change in British resolve, saying, "Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve. We will not back down until there is a just and lasting peace."

The trip follows a series of intensified Russian strikes, including a recent attack on a shopping centre that killed at least 16 people, and comes after Moscow warned of "consequences" over the reported use of British drones by Ukraine. Kyiv has increased long-range attacks on Russian targets, such as oil refineries and logistics facilities.

The Russian embassy in London accused Britain of escalating the crisis, claiming that deeper involvement would raise the cost for the UK. Burnham responded that the United Kingdom is a consistent ally, noting, "We are not fair-weather friends, we will be there in Ukraine's hour of need and that won't change."

During the Kyiv visit Burnham is also expected to announce that defence firm MBDA will be permitted to declassify information on UK components of the Scalp long-range missile, a French counterpart to the UK's Storm Shadow. President Emmanuel Macron is considering establishing local assembly lines for Scalp missiles in Ukraine.

The visit occurs as Russia confirmed the departure of its ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, from London in recent weeks.
