Shelley Fabares, celebrated for her roles on classic TV series and a brief music career, died in Los Angeles at age 82.

Shelley Fabares, best known for playing Mary Stone on "The Donna Reed Show" and Christine Armstrong on "Coach," died on Saturday in Los Angeles at the age of 82.

The actress' family released a statement expressing grief and requesting privacy, noting her impact as both a performer and a loved family member.

Fabares appeared in 192 episodes of "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1965 and earned two Emmy nominations for her supporting role on "Coach," which ran from 1989 to 1997. She also achieved a No.1 pop hit in 1961 with "Johnny Angel" and appeared in several 1960s films, including three starring Elvis Presley.

Her television work extended to guest spots on series such as "Fantasy Island," "One Day at a Time" and "The Love Boat," and she portrayed Joy Piccolo in the acclaimed TV movie "Brian's Song." Born in Santa Monica in 1944, Fabares entered entertainment through family connections; her aunt was actress Nanette Fabray.

Fabares was married to producer Lou Adler in the 1960s and later to actor Mike Farrell, with whom she was active in political and social causes. A longtime SAG member, she participated in union leadership and supported organ-donation awareness after receiving a liver transplant in 2000. She also advocated for the Alzheimer’s Association following her mother's diagnosis.

"We will miss her deeply — not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives," the family statement read.

Fabares' death marks the loss of a figure who spanned several eras of American television and popular culture.
