Giants defeat Dolphins 26-3 as roster decisions remain uncertain
New York beat Miami 26-3 in rainy conditions, but many starters sat, leaving limited insight into upcoming roster cuts.
The New York Giants routed the Miami Dolphins 26-3 on Sunday, a game in which both teams fielded largely depleted lineups. The Giants dominated from start to finish, but the limited participation of regular starters offered little guidance for pending roster decisions.
Running back Cam Skattebo, who was in a rotation with Tyrone Tracy last season, did not play, leaving Tracy to handle the ball. Tracy fumbled on a handoff, a mistake that highlighted his recent tendency to lose possession when hit. Backup Devin Singletary contributed 40 rushing yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown, while rookie Eric Gray added 37 receiving yards on six catches.
Miami’s offense was similarly hampered, with starting quarterback Malik Willis and running back De’Von Achane absent. Quarterback Cam Miller managed only two short scrambles, and the Dolphins amassed just 32 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Defensive linemen Zacch Pickens and Bobby Jamison-Travis each recorded a sack.
Defensive back Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-round pick who had been inactive in recent seasons, returned to contest passes, recording three tackles. Third-round rookie Dru Phillips and second-round pick Tyler Nubin also posted three tackles each, with Phillips forcing two fumbles.
Giants quarterback Jameis Winston targeted veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. four times; Beckham secured one catch and advanced the ball for a first down, but missed a later touchdown pass. Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who had been largely unused the previous week, caught four passes for 58 yards, leading the team in receptions. Calvin Austin recorded two catches for 24 yards. The depth chart at receiver remains unsettled as the team evaluates the roles of Malik Nabers and Malachi Fields.
Overall, the victory provided little clarity on the Giants’ final roster composition, as many key players were either rested or inactive.
