A head-on collision near Middlesbrough killed seven people, among them two police constables, after a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road struck a police car during a pursuit.

Seven people were killed in a head-on collision near Middlesbrough, northeast England, after a Volkswagen Passat travelling on the wrong side of a major road struck a marked police vehicle. Cleveland Police said all occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday.

The police force identified the two officers who died as Constables Matthew Blades, 37, and Tom Clough, 38. The crash occurred at about 3:39 a.m. GMT while officers were pursuing a vehicle they described as “suspicious”.

"This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland," Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller said.

"We have formally identified the passengers in the Volkswagen Passat and are contacting their families," the force added.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his condolences on social media, urging the public not to speculate about the incident.

The accident adds to a series of recent wrong-side driving crashes in the UK and Ireland, which have claimed 12 lives in less than a week. Irish officials have linked similar incidents to a social-media trend encouraging dangerous driving, and have called on platforms such as TikTok to address content that appears to glorify illegal road behaviour.
