Trump announces temporary tariff cut on imported ground beef, Iowa cattle group objects

Summary

President Trump said a 90-day reduction in tariffs on 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef aims to lower consumer prices, prompting criticism from the Iowa Cattlemen's Association.

President Donald Trump announced a temporary reduction in tariffs on imported ground beef, allowing 300,000 metric tons to enter the United States over the next 90 days in an effort to curb a 24% price rise since January 2025. The move was presented as a way to ease grocery costs for American families, particularly low-income households that rely heavily on ground beef.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, speaking at the Iowa State Fair, said the policy could bring prices down by about 25 percent and emphasized the administration’s focus on the consumer.

The Iowa Cattlemen's Association voiced opposition, with CEO Bryan Whaley stating the association is disappointed and warning that the influx of foreign product could immediately reduce profitability for domestic ranchers. He added that even after the 90-day period, the domestic supply would remain tight because rebuilding the cattle herd takes two to three years.

Rollins acknowledged the challenges facing Iowa producers, including high input costs and a historically low beef cattle inventory, but defended the decision as necessary to keep meat affordable while the industry works to restore herd numbers.
