Raiders coach leaves starting quarterback decision open ahead of season opener

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak told reporters after the team’s preseason win over the Houston Texans that a decision on the starting quarterback will be delayed for another week. > "We got another week. I don’t want anyone to be comfortable in their job. It should always be that way for all positions. So, let’s keep going," Kubiak said.

The franchise, which selected quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick, has indicated a long-term development plan for the rookie. Organizational leaders, including minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek, have emphasized giving Mendoza time to learn the offense and adjust to NFL defenses.

To provide a bridge, the Raiders signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, to start the season while Mendoza gains experience. Cousins has handled most of the first-team duties in camp, and the team’s current preference remains for him to start.

Mendoza’s first NFL start came in the preseason against Houston, where he threw an interception returned 80 yards for a touchdown. The play highlighted typical rookie mistakes that the organization hopes to address through gradual exposure rather than immediate pressure.

Analysts note that modern NFL trends often see highly drafted quarterbacks see playing time earlier than in past eras, but the Raiders appear committed to a patient approach as long as the team remains competitive. Should the season’s performance falter, the timeline for Mendoza’s involvement could accelerate.

Kubiak’s comments keep both quarterbacks in the mix, leaving the final decision pending a further evaluation of preseason performance and team needs.
