Detroit Lions post updated depth chart ahead of preseason matchup with Washington
The Lions released a revised roster list for their second preseason game, noting starter selections, injuries and potential role changes as coach Dan Campbell evaluates player participation.
The Detroit Lions have published an updated depth chart for their upcoming preseason contest against the Washington Commanders. Coach Dan Campbell indicated that, after resting 32 players—including 18 starters—in the first preseason game, the team plans to see some starters return, though the lineup could still shift based on recent practice sessions.
Quarterback Jared Goff will sit out, while Josh Dobbs is slated to start and share playing time with rookie Luke Altmyer, who has been receiving the majority of second-string reps in camp. At running back, Jahmyr Gibbs’ status is uncertain, and Isiah Pacheco (MCL strain) is expected to miss the game. Several backs with recent injuries—Sione Vaki (eye), Jacob Saylors (ankle), Jabari Small (knee)—have been practicing and may be available, though Saylors’ participation is doubtful.
Among wide receivers, the first four spots are set, but the WR5/6 positions remain open. Jameson Williams is still recovering from a shoulder injury, and Cedrick Wilson, recently back from a hip issue, has been praised for his versatility. Tight end Sam LaPorta (hip) is on the injury list, leaving Brock Wright, Tyler Conklin and Jackson Meeks to compete for the remaining roles.
On the offensive line, left tackle Penei Sewell could be replaced by swing tackle Larry Borom if he does not play. The interior line features Christian Mahogany at left guard and Tate Ratledge at right guard, with several reserves listed, including Miles Frazier and Colby Sorsdal. Center Juice Scruggs is dealing with a soft-tissue injury, and Cade Mays (wrist) and Ben Bartch (concussion) are unlikely to see action.
Defensively, the interior line includes Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams and Levi Onwuzurike as primary contributors, with several younger players moving up due to injuries. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson remains a starter, with DJ Wonnum or Tyler Lacy expected to line up opposite him. Linebacker Willie White and Malcolm Rodriguez continue to vie for the starting WILL spot, while other linebackers are battling for depth and special-teams roles.
The secondary lists D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin as the top cornerbacks, with Nick Whiteside returning from a hamstring issue and Ennis Rakestraw cleared of a leg injury but still listed as TBD. Safety Avonte Maddox and Chuck Clark are slated to start, though Thomas Harper’s availability is uncertain after missing a practice.
Special teams will feature Jack Fox as punter and holder, Jake Bates handling kickoffs, and a rotation of returners that includes Greg Dortch, Tom Kennedy, Dominic Lovett and Jacob Saylors. The depth chart highlights players with recent injuries and notes that several positions, particularly at wide receiver and tight end, could see further adjustments before the game.
