White Sox rally for walk-off win as Jake Rogers hits two-run homer

Résumé

Chicago White Sox erased a 4-0 deficit in the ninth inning, with Jake Rogers delivering a two-run walk-off home run to beat the New York Mets 6-4 and claim the series opener.

Chicago White Sox rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the New York Mets 6-4 in the opening game of a three-game series. Jake Rogers capped the comeback with a two-out, two-run walk-off homer in the ninth inning, giving the White Sox their tenth walk-off victory of the season.

Mets reliever Jefry Yan initially thought he had struck out Colson Montgomery on a 1-2 slider, but the pitch was low and Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez did not challenge it. Yan later walked Montgomery, allowed a sacrifice bunt by Brenton Doyle and gave up a ground-out to Luisangel Acuña.

Rogers fouled off an early fastball before connecting on a 98-mph pitch to the power alley in left field. Center fielder A.J. Ewing was positioned too far right to make a play, and the ball landed in the first-row seats for Rogers' first home run as a White Sox player.

The comeback began in the fifth inning when Sean Manaea, who had held the White Sox scoreless through four innings, yielded a solo home run to Randal Grichuk, cutting the Mets lead to 4-3. Colson Montgomery followed with a three-run homer that tied the game at 4-4.

Chicago’s bullpen then held the Mets scoreless: Jordan Hicks threw a scoreless seventh, Bryan Hudson delivered a perfect eighth, and Grant Taylor retired the side in the ninth after a walk to Luis Robert Jr.

For the Mets, Luis Robert Jr. went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, while Luisangel Acuña finished 0-for-4. The loss snapped a brief Mets lead that had peaked at 4-0 in the fourth inning.
