Progressive Aisha Wahab Wins California Special Election Amid Heavy Pro-Israel Spending
State Senator Aisha Wahab defeated moderate Democrat Melissa Hernandez in a special election for California's 14th congressional district, despite significant advertising funded by pro-Israel groups.
State Senator Aisha Wahab secured the seat for California's 14th congressional district in a special election held to fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Eric Swalwell. Wahab, identified as a progressive, received more than 42% of the vote, while her opponent, moderate Democrat Melissa Hernandez, garnered about 17%.
Wahab, who would become the first Afghan-American member of Congress, said she will "fight for this district that raised me" and emphasized that the result shows the district "cannot be bought." She also highlighted her personal background, noting her rise from foster care to elected office.
The race attracted substantial outside spending from groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with AIPAC, reportedly spent nearly $2.5 million supporting Hernandez, and BOLD America contributed about $1.9 million, according to media reports.
While foreign policy was not a central theme of Wahab's campaign, she has previously co-authored a state resolution condemning the humanitarian situation in Gaza and affirmed her belief that the events there constitute genocide. Hernandez, by contrast, acknowledged Israel's right to self-defence but said the destruction in Gaza had gone "too far."
Wahab's victory follows other recent instances where progressive candidates have withstood significant pro-Israel advertising expenditures. She will face Hernandez again in November for a full two-year term. Representative Ro Khanna congratulated Wahab, citing shared priorities such as Medicare for All, a living wage, and ending the war in Iran.
