Ukrainian National Arrested in Italy Over Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions

Summary

A Ukrainian man, identified as Serhii K., has been arrested in Italy on suspicion of coordinating the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, according to German prosecutors.

A Ukrainian national, identified as 49-year-old Serhii K., has been arrested in Italy in connection with the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany. German prosecutors announced the arrest on Thursday, stating that he is suspected of being one of the coordinators of the sabotage operation.

The arrest took place in San Clemente, near Rimini, where Italian Carabinieri apprehended Serhii K. at a holiday resort. He surrendered without resistance. The operation was conducted based on a European arrest warrant issued by Germany.

According to German prosecutors, the suspect was part of a group that used a yacht departing from Rostock, Germany, to plant explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm. The yacht had been rented from a German company using forged identities and intermediaries.

The explosions on September 26, 2022, severely damaged three out of four lines of the pipelines, which were built to transport Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. This incident intensified tensions over the war in Ukraine and Europe's energy security.

German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig praised the arrest as "a very impressive investigative success," emphasizing the importance of resolving the case. Swedish and Danish authorities had previously closed their investigations, leaving Germany's probe as the sole ongoing inquiry into the incident.
