Take-Two subpoenas Microsoft and other tech firms in GTA 6 leak investigation

Summary

Take-Two Interactive has filed a subpoena seeking records from Microsoft, Discord, Google and others to identify individuals behind recent Grand Theft Auto VI leaks.

Take-Two Interactive has issued a subpoena in New York demanding that Microsoft, Discord, Google and additional companies produce internal records that could help identify the source of recent Grand Theft Auto VI leaks. The legal request, filed on behalf of Take-Two’s counsel, seeks "all internal Microsoft business records and investigative records associated with Microsoft’s internal investigation of the ‘cyberleek’ persona sufficient to identify the user(s), person(s) and/or entity/ies associated with that persona," according to the filing.

The subpoena also requests evidence related to copyrighted material, including audio-visual content, artwork, images and dialogue, stating that the information will be used solely to protect Take-Two’s rights.

The leaks, attributed to a self-described group called Cyberleeks, have been shared on social media platforms and are reportedly being monetized through cryptocurrency donations. Take-Two said the unauthorized distribution has contributed to a 2% decline in its share price over the past week, though the stock remains up 6% for the year.

Take-Two has indicated that it may also seek information from Discord, Google and cryptocurrency exchanges used by the leakers. The company has not confirmed whether the leaked game build originated from an Xbox development kit, but Microsoft’s cloud and Xbox services could have been involved in the data transfer.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
