Ukrainian Man Arrested in Italy Over Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions
A Ukrainian national has been detained in Italy on suspicion of coordinating the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, according to German prosecutors.
German prosecutors have announced the arrest of a Ukrainian man in Italy, suspected of coordinating the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The suspect, identified as Serhii K., was detained in the Rimini province under a European arrest warrant issued by Germany. He is accused of being part of a group that planted explosive devices on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm. The group allegedly used a yacht, rented from a German company with forged documents, to transport the explosives from Rostock, Germany.
The explosions in September 2022 severely damaged three of the four pipelines, disrupting a major route for Russian gas to Europe amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. No party has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Russia has accused the United States of orchestrating the sabotage, a claim Washington denies. Investigations in Sweden and Denmark have concluded without sufficient evidence to pursue criminal cases, leaving Germany as the sole country actively investigating the incident.
German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig praised the arrest as an "impressive success" and emphasized the importance of fully resolving the case through criminal prosecution.
The suspect is expected to be extradited to Germany to face charges of causing explosions, anti-constitutional sabotage, and destruction of structures.
The Nord Stream pipelines, which transport Russian gas to Europe under the Baltic Sea, have been a focal point of geopolitical tensions. The 2022 explosions intensified energy supply crises in Europe, already strained by the conflict in Ukraine.
