Klay Thompson expected to join Miami Heat after Mavericks buyout

Résumé

Klay Thompson is set to sign a two-year deal with the Miami Heat after the Dallas Mavericks bought out his contract, adding veteran shooting to a roster built around Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Klay Thompson, a five-time NBA All-Star and four-time champion, is anticipated to sign with the Miami Heat for the 2026-27 season after clearing waivers following a buyout by the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported. Sources said the 36-year-old could agree to a two-year contract worth roughly $13 million. Thompson was slated to earn $17.5 million in the final year of his deal with Dallas before the two parties mutually terminated the agreement, which the Mavericks confirmed on Friday.

After a 13-season tenure with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson joined Dallas in a sign-and-trade after the 2023-24 season and posted an average of 12.9 points over 141 regular-season games across two seasons. Known for his elite three-point shooting, his move to South Florida would provide the Heat with an additional proven perimeter threat alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, who were acquired in a June trade.

"Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization," Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement. "We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
