An 18-year-old armed with a sword attacked Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, killing one person and seriously wounding two students; the suspect was arrested and is in custody.

Police in central Sweden arrested an 18-year-old who used a sword to attack Brinell School in the town of Fagersta on Friday, killing one person and seriously injuring two boys aged 12 to 17, officials said. The incident occurred while classes were in session at the school, which serves 400 to 500 students.

Police Chief Tommy Alriksson told a news conference that the suspect was taken into custody after officers fired shots during the arrest, though it was unclear whether the attacker was injured. He added that there is no evidence of additional perpetrators and that the investigation is ongoing.

National police have conducted two house searches linked to the suspect and plan to interview numerous witnesses. Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad said an alarm was received early Friday afternoon and that officers are reviewing any available camera footage.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the event as a serious incident and said authorities are working intensively to determine the motive. The Fagersta city government established a crisis center in a nearby sports hall, and nearby schools were placed on lockdown while roadblocks were set up.

The dead victim was found as police secured the school premises. The suspect remains in custody pending further investigation.
