Raiders coach says practice reps are crucial as he withholds Week 1 quarterback decision

Resumen

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak declined to name a starter for Week 1, emphasizing that continued repetitions in practice will be key to rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza's development.

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak said he will not announce whether rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza or veteran Kirk Cousins will start the season opener, stressing that the focus remains on giving the young player ample practice repetitions.

Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick, completed 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards in the team's second preseason game against the Houston Texans, throwing his first NFL interception.

"Reps," Kubiak said when asked what would help Mendoza improve. "I know that’s a short answer, but that’s the truth."

Kubiak added that the coaching staff will use early-morning sessions, late-night work, and technological tools to continue Mendoza's development if he does not start the regular-season game. He highlighted the role of quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan in providing extra time with Mendoza and fellow rookie Aidan O'Connell.

The coach also noted that keeping a player's starting status uncertain can be beneficial, stating, "I just don’t think it ever benefits a player to know they have a spot secured."

Mendoza received praise for his preparation during camp and for leading a 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive in the preseason opener. Cousins did not dress for the Thursday game and is expected to start, offering veteran leadership as the Raiders begin the 2026 season.
