Key witness in Andrea Yates case testifies in Lindsay Clancy murder trial

Summary

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, who testified in the Andrea Yates trial, appeared via Zoom to support the defense in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, with closing arguments expected early next week.

The murder trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy resumed on Friday, with the defense presenting its final witness. Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnight, known for his testimony in the 2006 Andrea Yates case, took the stand via Zoom to explain his recent surgery and related travel limitations. Technical problems briefly delayed his appearance, prompting a short recess while the court addressed the issue.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges for the deaths of her three children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months—who died in their Duxbury home on Jan. 24, 2023. The defense argues that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated, seeking a verdict of not criminally responsible that would place her in a state psychiatric facility rather than prison.

Prosecutors plan to call three rebuttal witnesses after Resnick’s testimony. Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan indicated that if all testimony concludes on Friday, closing arguments could be scheduled for Monday; otherwise, they may be moved to Tuesday.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole. A not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity finding would result in commitment to a state psychiatric hospital.
