Federal agents seize Eric Swalwell's devices and search home in sexual misconduct probe

Resumen

Federal investigators seized electronic devices from former Rep. Eric Swalwell at an airport and obtained a search warrant for his Washington home as part of a sexual misconduct investigation.

Federal agents seized electronic devices belonging to former California congressman Eric Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday and executed a search warrant at his Washington, D.C., residence the following day, a source familiar with the investigation said. The source, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly, requested anonymity.

Swalwell, who resigned from Congress in April after multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, has denied the accusations. An attorney for Swalwell was contacted for comment but did not respond.

The investigation follows reports that a former staffer alleged Swalwell raped her in a New York hotel in 2024, prompting the Manhattan District Attorney's office to open a case. A California woman also claimed he raped her in 2018; her lawyer said the former lawmaker is cooperating with law-enforcement agencies.

"We are encouraged to learn about the escalation of the FBI's investigation into the allegations against Eric Swalwell," attorney Arick Fudali said in a statement.

Swalwell, a seven-term representative who had been considered a potential candidate for California governor before withdrawing, previously served on the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees and was a member of the team prosecuting President Donald Trump’s second impeachment.

A special election held Thursday elected Aisha Wahab to complete Swalwell’s House term, which ends in January. She will seek a full term in the November election.
