Lakers minority owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong says he will not sell his 4% stake
Attorney Chuck Kenworthy confirmed that Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong has no intention of selling his minority share in the Los Angeles Lakers as the franchise ownership changes.
Attorney Chuck "Tiger" Kenworthy told ESPN that Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong will not sell his 4% minority share of the Los Angeles Lakers. He said the Soon-Shiong family plans to remain supportive and engaged partners after the pending transaction involving Mark Walter, Bob Iger and Josh Kushner closes.
Soon-Shiong, who bought the stake in 2010 from former player Magic Johnson, is a billionaire biotech entrepreneur and surgeon. The Buss family, which still holds about 17.8% of the team, is divided over the sale of its remaining shares. Five of the six Buss siblings have agreed to sell their portion at the $12.5 billion valuation, while Jeanie Buss, the acting governor, is contesting the plan.
A tag-along provision in the earlier sale to Walter would allow the siblings to roll their shares into any subsequent transaction. Legal disputes continue over whether Jeanie Buss can block the sale without co-trustee approval. If the Buss siblings sell, Jeanie would retain just under 3% ownership and would need to acquire an additional 12% to meet the NBA’s 15% threshold for the governor role. The only other minority owner with a comparable stake is Ed Roski Jr., who holds roughly 3% of the team.
