Universal's "The Odyssey" Tops Global Box Office for R-Rated Films
"The Odyssey" has surpassed $1.35 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie and overtaking "Deadpool & Wolverine".
Universal's adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, "The Odyssey," has reached $1.352 billion in global box-office receipts, making it the top-earning R-rated film worldwide and displacing "Deadpool & Wolverine," which finished its run at $1.33 billion. The figure includes $835.6 million from overseas markets and $516.3 million from the United States and Canada as of Wednesday.
The movie also marks director Christopher Nolan's most profitable release, exceeding the $1.085 billion earned by his 2012 film "The Dark Knight Rises." Its opening weekend generated $264.1 million globally, the largest for Nolan, and $139.6 million internationally, surpassing the overseas debuts of "Oppenheimer" and "The Dark Knight Rises" in comparable markets.
While "Deadpool & Wolverine" retains the record for the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated title at $444.7 million worldwide, "The Odyssey" achieved a domestic opening of $123.5 million, the third-largest for Nolan after "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Dark Knight." The film, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, is now the second-highest-grossing release of the year behind Sony/Marvel’s "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which has earned $2.039 billion.
