President Trump Calls for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's Resignation Amid Mortgage Fraud Allegations
President Donald Trump has urged Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign following allegations of mortgage fraud involving claims of dual primary residences.
President Donald Trump has called for the resignation of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook following allegations of mortgage fraud. The accusations, brought forward by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, claim that Cook declared two separate properties as her primary residence to secure favorable loan terms.
In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Pulte alleged that Cook obtained a $203,000 mortgage for a property in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on June 18, 2021, agreeing to occupy it as her primary residence for at least one year. Less than two weeks later, on July 2, 2021, she secured a $540,000 mortgage for a property in Atlanta, Georgia, under similar terms. Pulte's letter suggests that Cook may have received more favorable loan terms by certifying both homes as owner-occupied.
Pulte also noted that the Atlanta property was listed for rent approximately a year after its purchase, raising questions about its use as a primary residence. He urged the Justice Department to investigate whether Cook's actions constitute mortgage fraud under federal statutes.
President Trump amplified these allegations by posting on Truth Social, "Cook must resign, now!!!"
The Federal Reserve and the Justice Department have declined to comment on the matter. No charges have been filed, and it remains unclear whether an official investigation will be initiated.
Lisa Cook, appointed to the Federal Reserve Board by President Joe Biden in 2022 and reappointed in 2023 for a term lasting until 2038, is the first Black woman to serve on the board. Prior to her appointment, she was a professor of economics at Michigan State University.
This development is part of a broader pattern where the Trump administration has pursued mortgage fraud allegations against prominent Democrats, including Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both known critics of the former president.
The situation also underscores ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the Federal Reserve, particularly concerning interest rate policies. If Cook were to resign, it would provide President Trump an opportunity to appoint a successor potentially more aligned with his economic objectives.
