Supporters Gather in Pink Outside Massachusetts Courthouse During Lindsay Clancy Trial

Résumé

Hundreds of people rallied in Plymouth, Massachusetts, wearing pink to back Lindsay Clancy, who faces murder charges for the deaths of her three children, while her attorney argues she should not be held criminally responsible due to mental illness.

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Plymouth courthouse on Thursday, many dressed in pink shirts bearing slogans such as “Believe” and “She Needed Help,” to show solidarity with Lindsay Clancy, who is on trial for the killings of her three children. The rally, the largest public demonstration during the month-long trial, was organized by local advocates and featured a silent standing period of more than an hour before proceedings began.

Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, maintains that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder, conditions he says contributed to the tragedy. He noted that Clancy repeatedly sought help, including visits to outpatient providers, a suicide hotline, an emergency department, and a psychiatric hospital. Prosecutors allege that Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, planned the January 24, 2023 killings and orchestrated her husband’s absence from the home.

“Women are being dismissed, neglected and ignored when we speak up,” said April Vincent, a paralegal from Providence, Rhode Island, addressing the crowd.

“I hope Lindsay gets the care she needs and deserves and other women will come together like we did today,” said Jeanne Zaborski, a retired nurse from Rockland, Massachusetts.

During the hearing, a chaplain from Brigham and Women’s Hospital testified that Clancy was unconscious when first visited after the incident and later regained consciousness with a neutral emotional state. The chaplain recalled Clancy expressing relief that her children were “safe,” and noted she had heard a voice urging her to act to protect herself and the children.

The gathering concluded with participants forming a circle, reciting the Lord’s Prayer, and holding up heart-shaped hand gestures, while some displayed international flags to signal broader support.
