FBI Executes Search Warrants on Former Rep. Eric Swalwell in Sexual Misconduct Investigation

Summary

The FBI seized electronic devices from former Democratic congressman Eric Swalwell after serving search warrants at his airport arrival and Washington, D.C., residence as part of a criminal probe into sexual-misconduct allegations.

Federal agents carried out two search warrants targeting former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell over the weekend. One warrant was executed Saturday night after Swalwell landed at San Francisco International Airport, and a second was served at his Washington, D.C., home on Sunday. The FBI seized his electronic devices as part of a criminal investigation into multiple sexual-misconduct allegations.

Swalwell, who resigned from Congress in April after ending a gubernatorial campaign, had faced accusations ranging from rape to unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos. The bipartisan House Ethics Committee opened an inquiry, but it concluded when Swalwell left office because the committee’s jurisdiction covers only current members and staff.

"I made mistakes in judgment, but the assault allegation is false," Swalwell said, adding that he will contest the claim.

Separately, the White House released declassified documents related to an earlier FBI investigation into Swalwell’s 2015 relationship with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. The 97-page release contained information already in the public domain, and Swalwell has never been charged in that matter.
