Goodell says NFL teams will eventually be based outside the United States

Résumé

Commissioner Roger Goodell affirmed that the NFL will eventually have franchises located abroad, and analysts ranked six cities as the most viable options for such expansion.

Commissioner Roger Goodell told German broadcaster ntv that the league will eventually place teams outside the United States, saying, "At some point, there will be NFL teams outside the USA. I have no doubt that this will happen one day." The comment underscores the NFL’s ongoing push to grow its presence internationally.

Analysts evaluated six cities that could host a permanent franchise. Toronto tops the list, citing its proximity to existing NFL markets and the established Canadian football infrastructure, with a likely fit in the AFC East. Mexico City follows, noted for successful past games and manageable travel demands, potentially joining the NFC West.

London is considered a strong candidate because of existing stadium facilities and high demand for international games, though the long transatlantic travel required for regular-season play raises scheduling concerns. Munich is highlighted for its enthusiastic fan base and prior NFL events, but similar travel challenges apply.

Rio de Janeiro and Melbourne rank lower. Rio faces socioeconomic and safety issues that could affect player security, while Melbourne’s location in the Southern Hemisphere would place most of the season in summer, creating logistical and climate complications.

The analysis notes that any overseas team would need to address travel logistics, division alignment, and competitive balance before becoming a permanent part of the league.
