MLB wild-card race tight as teams eye strength of schedule for final stretch

Résumé

With six weeks left in the 2026 regular season, several American and National League clubs see their postseason chances hinge on the difficulty of remaining opponents.

Six weeks remain in the 2026 Major League Baseball regular season, and the wild-card race is tightly clustered in both leagues. Analysts note that, unlike the NFL or college sports, strength of schedule has traditionally been less decisive in baseball because each team faces every other club at least once under the balanced calendar. However, with the standings compressed, the remaining slate of opponents could tip the balance for teams on the fringe of the postseason.

In the American League, the Baltimore Orioles (61-65) sit one game behind the third wild-card spot and face the toughest remaining schedule, with an opponent winning percentage of .506, the league’s tenth-hardest. Their upcoming home series against the Yankees and Rays, followed by road trips to the Cardinals, Athletics and Rockies, present a significant hurdle. The Texas Rangers (62-64) hold the third wild-card position and have a .499 opponent winning percentage, the thirteenth-hardest, but benefit from 22 of their final 37 games at home, where they have posted a .542 winning rate.

The Detroit Tigers (61-65) and Minnesota Twins (62-65) each have a .493 and .483 opponent winning percentage respectively, ranking among the easier schedules in the AL. Both clubs face a mix of division rivals and interleague opponents, with the Tigers ending the season with six home games against the Nationals and Pirates. The Toronto Blue Jays (62-65) enjoy the third-easiest schedule at .480, highlighted by a nine-game road swing to Cleveland, Kansas City and Sacramento.

The Cleveland Guardians (61-65) possess the easiest remaining slate in MLB, with a .453 opponent winning percentage, featuring series against the Giants, Rockies, Angels and Royals—four of the league’s lowest-ranked teams. The Seattle Mariners (59-67) have a .471 opponent winning percentage, the second-easiest, after a demanding stretch that includes series against the Rays, Yankees, Astros and Brewers.

In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies (69-58) lead the wild-card race and face the fifth-hardest schedule at .522, with home series against Milwaukee and Tampa Bay and road trips to the West Coast and the East. The San Diego Padres (68-59) hold the third wild-card spot and encounter the fourteenth-hardest schedule at .496, including a final series at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium. The Arizona Diamondbacks (66-61) have a .492 opponent winning percentage, the twelfth-easiest, while the Miami Marlins (64-63) and St. Louis Cardinals (65-62) each face opponent percentages of .523 and .492 respectively.

Teams such as the Orioles, Rangers and Guardians see their postseason hopes closely tied to how they perform against the mix of strong and weak opponents in the final weeks, while clubs with easier schedules aim to capitalize on favorable matchups to secure a wild-card berth.
