U.S. cinema operators say the summer of blockbuster releases has delivered the strongest box-office revenues since 2019, and they are optimistic about a diverse slate of films slated for the autumn season.

Cinema executives said the recent summer season produced the highest box-office earnings since the pre-pandemic era, driven by strong attendance for several new releases. B&B Theatres chief executive Bob Bagby described the opening weekend of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" as requiring extra showtimes, some as early as 8 a.m. and as late as 2:30 a.m., to accommodate demand. He noted that the film surpassed the previous opening-weekend record with $360 million in North America and has earned more than $2 billion worldwide.

Greg Heckmann, marketing director for Maya Cinemas, said the concurrent success of "The Odyssey" and other titles such as "Toy Story 5" and "Project Hail Mary" created a box-office weekend that felt comparable to 2019. He added that Christopher Nolan’s epic has generated $1.29 billion globally, with $354 million coming from IMAX screenings, and suggested that more filmmakers adopting similar approaches could sustain theaters.

Actress Anne Hathaway, who appeared in several of the season’s hits, told Variety that she has observed audiences returning to late-night screenings and described the resurgence as a “joy.”

Industry observers noted that theater owners remain cautious about the upcoming Paramount-Warner Bros. merger and its potential impact on film output, but Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison pledged to increase joint production to at least 30 films per year. Heckmann said a continued string of releases could reinforce the value of theatrical exhibition.

Looking ahead, executives from chains such as Flix Brewhouse and B&B Theatres said the fall schedule includes a range of titles—from comedies and horror to franchise sequels—providing multiple new releases each weekend. Chris Randleman, chief revenue officer of Flix Brewhouse, said the variety of upcoming films should keep audiences engaged, while Bagby highlighted upcoming projects like a Tom Cruise comedy and a "Resident Evil" reboot.

The operators expect the holiday season to feature several tentpole films, including two major franchise entries slated for December, which could push domestic annual revenues toward $10 billion, a level not seen since before the pandemic.

"We’re not judging ourselves in terms of keeping up the summer momentum," Randleman said. "We’re looking at whether we’re better off than we were last year. Even if it’s a low bar, we are definitely going to exceed last year."
