U.S. and South Korean Forces Cut Joint Drills After Trump Order

Resumen

The United States and South Korea announced they will end the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises early and scale back related field training, following President Donald Trump's directive to reduce the drills.

The United States and South Korea said on Wednesday they will end the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise on Friday, three weeks earlier than planned, and will reduce the size of accompanying field training. The change follows President Donald Trump’s instruction to the Pentagon to "substantially reduce" the summer drills, a move he said was intended to improve relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and to protest South Korea’s refusal to support U.S. policy on Iran.

South Korean officials said they were not warned in advance of the president’s decision, and expressed concern that the abrupt scaling back could affect joint defense readiness. The Pentagon stated that essential training will continue through simulations and that the adjustments will not degrade U.S. training objectives.

Analysts warned that shortening the drills could weaken the long-standing U.S.–South Korea alliance, noting that reduced joint exercises may leave future commanders less familiar with coordinated procedures. Ulchi Freedom Shield is primarily a computer-based command post exercise designed to prepare the allies for potential North Korean aggression, supplemented by field maneuvers.

North Korea’s state news agency condemned the drills as "frantic" and "extremely dangerous," pledging to counter the perceived threat. However, the regime has not directly responded to Trump’s outreach.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s office expressed hope that improved U.S.–North Korea relations could lead to constructive dialogue on the peninsula, a statement that drew criticism from domestic conservatives. Meanwhile, South Korean foreign and defense ministers said they were not consulted before the president’s announcement but affirmed that the alliance remains strong and that consultations continue.

Some experts suggested that the drill reduction may also be intended to pressure South Korea to align with U.S. positions on Iran, citing Trump’s comments that the exercises sent an "inappropriate and hostile" signal to North Korea while South Korea declined to join U.S. efforts on Iranian denuclearization.
