South Carolina Senate Candidate Darline Graham Says She Is Not Well- versed in National Security Issues

Résumé

Appointed to fill her late brother's seat, Sen. Darline Graham told voters she lacks detailed knowledge of national security while affirming support for the military, as the special election runoff approaches.

Sen. Darline Graham, who was appointed to complete her brother Lindsey Graham's Senate term, told voters during a Tuesday debate that she is not well-informed on national-security matters such as Taiwan or the South China Sea. She added that she supports the military, citing her brother’s 33-year Air Force career, and pledged to do “everything I can to support the military.”

Graham, a Republican backed by President Donald Trump, is seeking a full term in the November election after losing the party’s primary and moving to a runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman. Norman described Taiwan as an important U.S. ally and praised the president’s approach to China.

The winner of the runoff will face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician campaigning on affordable health care and financial security.

"I’m just going to be honest here. I’m not that informed on national security," Graham said.

"We have a trading relationship with them that is beneficial to the United States. What the president is doing right is he’s enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China," Norman said.
