LIV Golf players assess progress after meeting with prospective investor

Résumé

LIV Golf executives met with players and an unnamed prospective investor, with some players expressing optimism while others remained cautious about the league's future funding and format.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil and a prospective investor met with the league's players for about 50 minutes on Tuesday at the Chatham Hills clubhouse in Westfield, Indiana. The gathering came as the league faces cancelled events, lawsuits over unpaid invoices and reduced prize money after the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing.

Players said the discussion gave them a clearer sense of the investor's vision. "I think there's a lot of excitement in the room," said LIV golfer Brendan Steele. He added that the investor's plan could bring new opportunities and improve operations.

The proposed arrangement would involve a 10-event schedule split between international and U.S. venues, allowing participants to also play on other tours. Details of the investment, including its size and terms, were not disclosed, and it remains uncertain whether high-profile members such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau will stay with the league.

DeChambeau was reportedly animated after the meeting, while others, including former Masters champion Sergio García, gave noncommittal responses. "We'll see," García said. Cleeks GC captain Martin Kaymer noted that the investor is enthusiastic but that many specifics still need to be worked out.

The league also announced the cancellation of its upcoming team championship in Michigan, marking the second event dropped since the funding withdrawal. The $30 million team purse will be distributed this week, and the individual winner's prize has been reduced to $2.02 million.

LIV Golf continues to face legal claims for unpaid services, including a $1.23 million suit from Fresh Tape Media and a separate lawsuit from Mobii Systems for over $1 million. O'Neil is scheduled to address the media on Wednesday.
