WNBA security asked fans to cover shirts at Atlanta Dream game, league declines to name decision-maker

Résumé

At a recent Atlanta Dream home game, security personnel instructed several spectators to conceal their shirts, prompting criticism from the team and a league statement that the incident should not have occurred.

Security staff at an Atlanta Dream game asked three spectators to cover their shirts, including a mother and daughter wearing apparel from the XX-XY Athletics brand, which promotes women's sports, and another fan wearing a pro-transgender shirt. The Dream said its own personnel were not involved and criticized the league's security for falling short of expected standards.

"The Atlanta Dream believes in creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Unfortunately, at last night's game, WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard. At no point was Dream personnel involved in the decisions made by WNBA security," the team said.

The WNBA issued a separate statement acknowledging the incident and saying it should not have happened, but did not identify who ordered the shirt coverings. Fox News Digital reported that the individual who approached the mother and daughter was dressed in a tan suit rather than typical arena security attire. The league has not responded to requests for the responsible party's identity.
