Rep. Ralph Norman has openly questioned President Donald Trump’s endorsement of interim Sen. Darline Graham, highlighting the troubling trend of political favoritism and lack of genuine experience in Republican politics.
U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman told the Associated Press that President Donald Trump’s endorsement of interim Sen. Darline Graham in the upcoming Republican runoff for the South Carolina Senate seat is a “head-scratcher.” Norman, who placed second to Graham in the Aug. 11 special primary, pointed out that his own experience in Congress, business, and consistent support for Trump’s agenda make him a stronger candidate for the six-year term.
Graham, who was appointed after the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, announced her candidacy for a full term following encouragement from Trump, who had been an ally of her late brother. This move exemplifies the Republican Party’s reliance on political connections and dynastic favoritism rather than merit or public service. Graham has highlighted her brief tenure running a state agency and her commitment to advancing Trump-aligned policies, but critics argue that her qualifications pale in comparison to Norman’s record.
Norman expressed concern that voters have had insufficient time to evaluate Graham’s qualifications, noting his own statewide campaign experience in the June gubernatorial primary. He also dismissed the influence of a super-PAC that previously supported Lindsey Graham and now backs Darline Graham, underscoring the problematic role of big money and entrenched interests in Republican primaries.
“It’s a head-scratcher,” Norman said, adding that he believes his record and South Carolina-based funding give him an advantage.
Norman, who previously backed former Gov. Nikki Haley over Trump in the 2024 presidential primary but has since aligned himself with Trump, said the former governor’s endorsement does not hinder his campaign. This shifting loyalty reflects the opportunism rampant within the GOP.
The runoff, scheduled for Aug. 25, will determine the Republican nominee who will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November general election, offering voters a chance to reject political nepotism and support real experience.
