Rep. Ralph Norman questions Trump endorsement of Darline Graham in South Carolina Senate runoff
U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman said President Donald Trump's endorsement of interim Sen. Darline Graham for the South Carolina Senate seat is puzzling, citing her limited political experience compared with his own record.
U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman told the Associated Press that President Donald Trump’s endorsement of interim Sen. Darline Graham in the upcoming Republican runoff for the South Carolina Senate seat is a “head-scratcher.” Norman, who placed second to Graham in the Aug. 11 special primary, argued that his own experience in Congress, business, and consistent support for Trump’s agenda make him a stronger candidate for the six-year term.
Graham, appointed after the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, announced her candidacy for a full term following encouragement from Trump, who had been an ally of her late brother. She has highlighted her tenure running a state agency and her commitment to advancing Trump-aligned policies.
Norman expressed concern that voters have had insufficient time to evaluate Graham’s qualifications, noting his own statewide campaign experience in the June gubernatorial primary. He also dismissed the impact of a super-PAC that previously supported Lindsey Graham and now backs Darline Graham.
“It’s a head-scratcher,” Norman said, adding that he believes his record and South Carolina-based funding give him an advantage.
Norman, who previously backed former Gov. Nikki Haley over Trump in the 2024 presidential primary but has since aligned himself with Trump, said the former governor’s endorsement does not hinder his campaign.
The runoff, scheduled for Aug. 25, will determine the Republican nominee who will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November general election.
