Worcester police seek 58-year-old woman in connection with off-duty officer's death

Summary

Police in Worcester, Massachusetts, are searching for Karen Solomon, 58, who is considered armed and dangerous, after an off-duty officer was found dead at her home.

Worcester police are searching for 58-year-old Karen Solomon, who they say is "presumed to be armed and dangerous," after an off-duty patrol officer with three decades of service was discovered dead inside Solomon's residence on Wildwood Avenue early Tuesday. The officer’s name has not been released.

Chief Paul Saucier said the suspect was last seen walking toward Westcott Street in pajama shorts and a tank top, and urged anyone with information to contact authorities. A reverse-911 alert was issued to residents within a 2.5-mile radius, and a multi-agency response included a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter, Homeland Security personnel, and U.S. Marshals.

"You got a person in the neighborhood, in the area, presumed to be armed and dangerous, you want to do everything you can to find that person as quickly as possible and also find out what happened in the house that evening," said Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr., adding that officials want Solomon for questioning.

The investigation follows a 5:30 a.m. call to Solomon’s home reporting a medical situation. Authorities declined to comment further on the relationship between the officer and Solomon, citing state domestic-violence confidentiality laws.

Solomon, previously featured in a 2016 interview about an app for police in crisis and the author of a book highlighting positive police actions, was married to a Worcester officer at that time. Neighbors expressed shock at the incident, recalling the officer as a well-known presence in the community.
