Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returns to camp after family emergency

Summary

Eric Bieniemy resumed his duties at Kansas City Chiefs training camp following a leave of absence caused by his wife's gunshot injury, noting her recovery and his continued involvement with the team via remote practice viewing.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to the team's training camp after a week-long leave prompted by his wife Mia Bieniemy’s gunshot wound in a domestic incident involving their son. The coach thanked the organization and fans for the support his family received during the crisis.

"She is on the road to recovery. She is doing great. It’s one of the main reasons why I’m back here because of her recovery," Bieniemy said, describing his wife as a "soldier" and a "saint."

While caring for his family, Bieniemy stayed connected to the team by watching practices through a live stream. He said the technology allowed him to follow the script and stay engaged, even joking that his language sometimes surprised other family members present.

"It felt good just to see the guys work… and to feel like I was still a part of it," he added.

Bieniemy described his remote participation as active, noting he would comment on plays and question coaching decisions to keep his football mindset sharp.

"Yelling at the screen, yelling at players… I was yelling at myself, ‘Why would you put that play in?’"

He emphasized the importance of remaining focused and ready for his role as the Chiefs prepare for their season opener on September 14.

"It feels good to be back because when you’ve been in this environment, it becomes your family. This is your family away from your family," Bieniemy said, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with head coach Andy Reid and the staff.
