Angel Reese's Defensive Impact and Rebounding Prowess Highlighted in WNBA Analysis

Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese, a three-time WNBA All-Star, has emerged as one of the league's most effective defenders. Data from Hoops Junkie show the Dream's defensive rating improves by 14.9 points per 100 possessions when Reese is on the floor, the best on-off differential in the WNBA. Her presence also lowers opponents' effective field-goal percentage by 7.7% and true shooting percentage by 6.2%, while increasing opponent turnover rates by 2.9%, the third-best mark in the league.

Reese's defensive versatility is attributed to her length, switchability and high energy level, according to Dream head coach Karl Smesko, who noted her ability to cover a wide rebounding radius. Offensively, she averages 15.6 points per game, the third-highest on the Dream, though her shooting efficiency remains a point of critique.

Reese has also distinguished herself as a rebounder, averaging 12.1 rebounds per game this season, the third consecutive year she has led the league in that category. She set a rookie record with a 13.1 rebounds-per-game average, followed by a 12.6 average in her second season, both among the highest in league history. She is the only player to record 12 or more rebounds per game in back-to-back seasons and reached 1,000 career rebounds in 79 games, ten fewer than the previous record holder.

In a recent interview, Reese described her rebounding success as stemming from tenacity and instinct rather than size or strength. Smesko added that her rebounding radius allows her to secure balls from eight to ten feet away. At 24, analysts suggest that while her offensive efficiency may improve, her defensive contributions and rebounding achievements already place her among the WNBA's elite players.
