Arizona moved second baseman Ketel Marte to the restricted list after he failed to appear for the team's game at Fenway and later underwent a knee MRI.

Ketel Marte did not travel to Fenway Park for the Arizona Diamondbacks' 11-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Monday, prompting the club to place him on the restricted list. The player returned to Arizona on Tuesday for an MRI of his knee, though details of any injury have not been disclosed. Arizona also recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from its Triple-A affiliate in Reno.

"It's been a crazy day. All I know is he's dealing with a personal issue," manager Torey Lovullo said, adding that the team was still trying to determine the reason for Marte's absence.

Marte, who is batting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season, has missed games in consecutive seasons, including a three-game absence after the All-Star break last year. The Diamondbacks, sitting third in the National League West with a 66-60 record, are pursuing a wild-card spot, and his unavailability was noted as a factor in the team's recent 10-run defeat.

The Red Sox improved to 67-58 with the victory, while Arizona hopes to have Marte back to bolster its playoff push.
