Mark Walter and Todd Boehly Explore Sale of Chelsea Stakes

Summary

Owners Mark Walter and Todd Boehly are reportedly seeking to sell their shares in Chelsea Football Club, with Clearlake Capital mentioned as a potential buyer.

Owners Mark Walter and Todd Boehly are reportedly looking to sell their stakes in Chelsea Football Club, according to a report by the Financial Times. The duo, who acquired their shares when the BlueCo consortium purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, are said to be in talks with Clearlake Capital, the firm that holds a majority ownership of the English Premier League side.

Clearlake Capital has reportedly experienced friction with the minority stakeholders since the 2022 acquisition, and negotiations between the parties have been ongoing for several years without reaching a final agreement.

Walter, who sold his majority interest in the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year for $12.5 billion after buying the team for $10 billion, is under a federal investigation that has included the seizure of his phone and laptop by the FBI.

Chelsea was bought for a total of £2.5 billion in 2022, with an additional £1.75 billion pledged for future investments in the stadium, academy, women’s team and foundation. The club’s current valuation is estimated at around £5 billion.
