Norwegian King Harald Hospitalized for Hemolytic Anemia Treatment

Summary

King Harald of Norway, 89, was admitted to the National Hospital for treatment of hemolytic anemia, with Crown Prince Haakon acting as regent during his sick leave.

King Harald of Norway, aged 89, was admitted to Oslo's National Hospital on Monday afternoon for treatment of a blood disorder, the royal palace said. The palace explained that the king has been receiving cortisone for hemolytic anemia in recent weeks, which caused fluid buildup requiring hospital care.

"His royal highness the crown prince is regent during this period," the statement added, referring to his son Crown Prince Haakon. The king has been on sick leave for two weeks. Harald, who has reigned since 1991, has previously been hospitalized several times, including a February stay in the Canary Islands for a skin infection and a 2022 episode in Malaysia that led to a temporary pacemaker before a permanent one was installed in Norway.
