Norway's King Harald Hospitalized with Severe Infection

Summary

Norway's 89-year-old King Harald is in serious condition after being admitted to Oslo University Hospital for a bacterial blood infection, prompting the cancellation of royal engagements and statements of support from officials.

Norway's King Harald, 89, was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on August 17 for treatment of a bacterial infection in his blood. The royal court said his health has worsened and described his condition as "very serious." Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja have cancelled all scheduled appearances, and members of the royal family were observed at the hospital.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre issued a statement saying the nation is united in sending thoughts to the king and his family. The speaker of Norway's parliament, Masud Gharahkhani, cut short an official visit to Iceland to return home, while the Committee of Foreign Relations and Defence recalled its members from South Korea. The Lutheran Church of Norway’s College of Bishops, which was in Rome for a papal audience, also announced an early return.

In 2024, King Harald indicated he would scale back his official duties due to his age but affirmed he would not abdicate, citing his lifelong oath to the throne.
