Two students killed in shooting at Zamboanga school attached to Ateneo de Zamboanga University
A grade-9 student opened fire inside a classroom at a high school linked to Ateneo de Zamboanga University, killing a senior student before taking his own life; authorities say the incident is now contained.
A gunman entered a classroom at a high school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City on Tuesday and opened fire, killing a male student a grade above him before the shooter, a ninth-grader, turned the weapon on himself, police said. University president Ernald Andal confirmed that the shooting has ended and no other injuries were reported. > "We do not want any of these things to happen. We wish to prioritize the safety of all our students," Andal said. The incident follows a June attack at a public high school in Tacloban City that left three students dead and about 20 injured. While the Philippines enforces strict gun-ownership rules, including background checks and psychological evaluations, illegal firearms continue to circulate. Footage from local news showed students and parents gathered outside the school gates, with armed police and soldiers present as crime-scene investigators arrived. The school occupies a five-story building on an 8-hectare campus that serves grade school and junior high students.
