Chiefs focus on discipline and detail in offensive drills after penalty-laden loss

Resumen

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid emphasized reducing penalties and improving technique as the Chiefs held a high-intensity practice, with assistants praised for their attention to detail.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid used Monday's practice to stress the need for greater discipline after the Chiefs committed 12 penalties, most of them on offense, in a 20-12 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams. > "Obviously, the five holding calls and the five illegal-procedure penalties: you can’t have those. You have to be more disciplined than that, so we go back and keep stressing that," Reid said. He added that the offensive line must avoid overshooting and that receivers need to release the ball at the proper moment, emphasizing positioning over effort.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy pushed the starting unit hard, urging wide receiver Rashee Rice to finish routes rather than jog back to the huddle. First-year receivers coach Chad O’Shea repeatedly reminded players, "Details, guys! Details," before sending them through routes again. Reid praised the new assistants, noting, > "I like the detail that they’re bringing to the group there. They’re staying on the guys… there’s a lot of teaching going on, and they’re doing a good job of doing the teaching."

On the line, veteran Jaylon Moore received reps at right guard while rookie Kahlil Benson shifted to tackle, a move Reid said allows Benson to face tougher competition and continue developing. Reid also highlighted rookie running back Emmett Johnson's progress on handoffs, noting his footwork and vision, though he said Johnson still needs to refine his angles and patience.

Defensively, second-year end Ashton Gillotte returned to full practice, taking on a SAM linebacker role alongside the front four. Defensive end R. Mason Thomas appeared to earn more first-team snaps, while Felix Anudike-Uzomah was limited to second-team duties. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy participated in seven-on-seven drills but did not play the full 11-on-11 sets, with the starting receiver group consisting of Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton and rookie Cyrus Allen.

The Chiefs will resume practice the following morning at 9:15 a.m. in St. Joseph.
