Joe Rogan questions Islam Makhachev's ability to face larger welterweight challengers after UFC 330
Podcast host Joe Rogan said Islam Makhachev's first title defense exposed concerns about his capacity to handle bigger welterweight opponents as he moves up to 170 pounds.
Islam Makhachev retained his UFC lightweight title by defeating Ian Machado Garry via unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. The champion, who entered the bout with a 29-1 record, faced significant striking and grappling pressure, sustaining visible damage and struggling with several takedown attempts before securing control in the final round.
Podcast host Joe Rogan commented that the fight tested Makhachev in ways not previously seen, noting that the champion appeared less dominant against the larger opponent. Rogan said, "> He did what he had to do and was really tested in ways we haven't seen him tested before. It was a difficult fight. Although he won by a good margin, a healthy margin, there were moments where you're used to Islam having a certain amount of control and dominance that he just didn't seem to have over the bigger guys."
Rogan added that upcoming welterweight contenders such as Carlos Prates and Michael Morales present a greater size and power challenge, stating, "> What happens if he fights those guys? The gap is bigger than it is with Ian Garry."
He also observed that the physical demands on Makhachev increase when grappling larger fighters, comparing the effort required at lightweight to that at welterweight. Rogan concluded that, from a corner perspective, a return to the lightweight division might be advisable.
