Mother and sister testify to Lindsay Clancy's deteriorating mental health before children’s deaths

During the fourth week of Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, her mother and sister described a rapid decline in her mental state, including anxiety, paranoia and suicidal thoughts, months before she killed her three children.

Lindsay Clarity’s mother, Paula Musgrove, and her sister took the stand Monday in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to describe the worsening of Clancy’s mental health beginning in October 2022. Musgrove recounted a text from her daughter that read, “Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick… I had horrible insomnia all night… the medicine the doctor prescribed for anxiety… is making things worse.”

Musgrove said that in December, while standing in the kitchen with Clancy and her husband Patrick, she heard Clancy admit she had thoughts of harming the children. She added that Clancy became increasingly fearful of sleeping alone, paranoid, and believed the medication she was taking was “destroying her mind.”

The testimony came after prosecutors rested their case, having called several dozen witnesses. Prosecutors maintain that Clancy, a former labor-and-delivery nurse, planned the Jan. 24, 2023 killings and manipulated her husband’s whereabouts. Her defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, does not dispute the killings but argues that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible because she suffered postpartum psychosis, bipolar disorder and adverse reactions to antidepressants prescribed after the birth of her third child.

Witnesses for the defense highlighted that Clancy had sought psychiatric treatment, was intermittently adherent to medication, and faced fragmented care among providers. They also presented evidence that she was discharged from a psychiatric facility after one day and denied a higher level of care when she could not demonstrate a concrete suicide plan.

Prosecutors countered by showing texts and photographs indicating Clancy performed routine activities on the day of the killings, such as taking the children to a doctor’s appointment and playing in the snow. Her doctors testified they had never observed mania or psychosis, though she repeatedly expressed suicidal thoughts.

Patrick Clancy testified about discovering his children’s bodies and later recounted a 911 call in which he heard his wife say, “She killed the kids!” He also described a subsequent phone call from Lindsay in which she spoke of hearing a voice urging her to act.

The jury has seen Clancy break down in sobs during the trial, though she has not been called to testify.
