President Trump meets teen lifeguard who rescued 10-year-old at White House

Resumen

Donald Trump welcomed 10-year-old Nathanial Rai and 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams to the Oval Office after a viral video showed Williams saving the boy from crashing waves at Santa Cruz.

President Donald Trump hosted 10-year-old Nathanial Rai and his rescuer, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, in the Oval Office following a widely shared video of the July rescue at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California. During the meeting, Trump praised Williams, saying, "He’s a real hero. I don’t know if I’d do it. I wouldn’t, probably. You’re lucky I wasn’t on the service that day."

Rai, dressed in a dark suit and maroon tie, sat beside his father, Sumit Rai, and the president on a gold couch while Williams stood nearby. The rescue footage, which showed Williams clinging to the boy as waves crashed over them before both were pulled ashore by a second lifeguard, Aaron Bohnen, had gone viral and prompted Trump to promise a civilian honor for the teen.

The incident coincided with California lawmakers debating a bill to designate lifeguards as first responders, a change supporters say would provide greater professional recognition, resources, and worker protections. State Senator Laird noted that while lifeguards perform emergency duties, formal first-responder status would require additional training standards and funding decisions.

Rai’s father expressed gratitude, telling the Associated Press, "What he did, I can never repay. I’m forever grateful."
