LIV Golf Cancels Team Championship, Shifts Title to Indianapolis Event

Resumen

LIV Golf announced the cancellation of its scheduled Team Championship and will award the team title based on results from the Indianapolis tournament.

LIV Golf confirmed on Monday that the Team Championship slated for Aug. 27-30 at The Cardinal in Plymouth, Michigan, will not be held. The league had previously maintained that the event would proceed, but construction at the venue had not progressed and ticket sales were halted after Fox Sports removed the tournament from its schedule.

Three LIV players—Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin and Adrian Meronk—have entered the DP World Tour’s British Masters, which takes place the same week. The cancellation follows earlier disruptions after the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew its funding for the tour in April, prompting the postponement of a June event in New Orleans.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said the league will determine the team champion during this week’s Indianapolis tournament, adding that concluding the season now allows the organization to focus resources on the next phase of its operations.

The league also cancelled planned post-round concerts in Indianapolis featuring country singer Thomas Rhett and DJ Disco Lines, citing unavoidable changes to the entertainment program. O’Neil has been promoting a revised “LIV 2.0” model that would feature fewer events, smaller purses and majority equity stakes for players.

Recent developments have added pressure on LIV Golf, including the Asian Tour’s decision to partner with the PGA and DP World Tours, and a DP World Tour warning of financial penalties for players who compete on both circuits in 2027. The league also faces a lawsuit from technology firm Mobii for over $1 million in unpaid invoices and has filed a WARN notice indicating possible layoffs.
