Defense Calls First Witnesses in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial

摘要

The defense began presenting witnesses in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, who admitted killing her three children, arguing that postpartum psychosis and medication issues should mitigate criminal responsibility.

The defense opened its case on Monday by calling a former coworker and Clancy’s sister to testify in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother who admitted strangling her three young children. Prosecutors had rested their case earlier after three weeks of testimony.

Prosecutors contend that Clancy, a former labor-and-delivery nurse, deliberately sent her husband out of the house on Jan. 24, 2023, then killed the children and attempted suicide. Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, does not dispute the killings but argues that postpartum psychosis—a rare condition linked to childbirth-related stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes—should preclude criminal liability. He also cited her bipolar disorder and the worsening effect of antidepressants prescribed after the birth of her third child.

The jury has heard evidence that Clancy sought treatment for severe mental-health problems, including a self-admission to a psychiatric hospital, but also that she frequently missed doses of medication for insomnia, anxiety and depression and expressed concerns about dependence. The defense highlighted inconsistencies in her care, noting that doctors did not coordinate, used remote appointments and failed to share notes, and that she was discharged from one facility after a day and denied higher-level care when she could not demonstrate a suicide plan.

Prosecutors countered by questioning the seriousness of her suicide attempt and presenting texts and photos showing Clancy engaged in routine activities on the day of the killings, such as taking the children to a doctor’s appointment and playing in the snow. Her physicians testified they never observed mania or psychosis, though she repeatedly expressed suicidal thoughts.

Clancy has not testified and is not required to do so. Jurors have observed her break down in tears during the trial, including when prosecutors displayed autopsy photographs of the children. Earlier testimony from her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, described the shock of finding his children dead and recounted a 911 call he made after discovering his wife in the backyard. He also said that a week after the killings, Lindsay called him and spoke about hearing a voice urging her to act, without mentioning the children.
