Supreme Court declines second request by Trump to overturn Carroll verdict
The U.S. Supreme Court again refused to hear President Donald Trump's petition to reverse a jury award of $5 million to writer E. Jean Carroll in a sexual assault and defamation case.
The Supreme Court on Monday denied a second petition from President Donald Trump seeking to overturn a jury verdict that awarded writer E. Jean Carroll $5 million for claims of sexual assault and defamation. The request asked the Court to revisit its June decision that had rejected Trump’s earlier appeal, a step the Court rarely takes.
Carroll’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York, alleges that Trump assaulted her in a department-store dressing room in 1996 and later defamed her by calling her accusations a “con job” and a “hoax.” Trump has denied the allegations and said he does not know Carroll.
Trump has already paid the judgment, including interest. He is also pursuing a separate Supreme Court appeal related to an earlier defamation case in which Carroll was awarded $83 million; that appeal is expected to be considered later in the year.
