Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy linked to possible trade as preseason ends
Sources say JJ McCarthy may seek a trade from Minnesota, with several teams reportedly interested, though his market value is currently low.
The Minnesota Vikings opened the 2026 preseason with a 10-3 win over the New York Giants, but attention quickly shifted to the quarterback position. After starter Kyler Murray was removed after one drive, rookie JJ McCarthy took over, completing four of seven passes for 34 yards and recording the team's only sack.
Despite head coach Kevin O'Connell naming Murray the starter, rumors have persisted that McCarthy wants to leave Minnesota. An NFL insider cited by journalist Jason La Canfora said a general manager told McCarthy he would likely be elsewhere by season's end. The same source suggested the Vikings recruited Murray to compete for the starting role, limiting McCarthy's long-term prospects.
"They knew they couldn’t bring him back as the starter and keep that locker room together," the GM was quoted as saying.
Analysts note that McCarthy, the 2024 tenth overall pick, currently has little trade value; at present, the Vikings could not command a second-round draft pick for him, according to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis. Nonetheless, several teams are reportedly monitoring the situation. Potential destinations mentioned include the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, should a low price be offered.
The Giants are said to be interested due to injuries at quarterback, while the Dolphins' ownership has ties to McCarthy’s college program. The Eagles’ front office is reportedly evaluating developmental quarterbacks ahead of the supplemental draft. The quarterback’s future will depend on both his performance and the Vikings' assessment of his development.
