Arrest Made in Virginia State University Shooting That Injured Five

Resumen

Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect after a shooting outside Virginia State University residence halls left five people wounded, including one critically, as the campus prepared for the start of classes.

Police arrested Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico County, on charges of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after a shooting outside Virginia State University residence halls injured five people early Saturday. Harris was found hiding in a dormitory closet and is being held at Chesterfield County Jail; investigators said additional charges may follow.

The incident, which occurred around 1:28 a.m. near the Quad Annexes, triggered a campuswide lockdown that was lifted by 8:20 a.m. A VSU student, a 20-year-old man, and four other individuals—a 21-year-old man who was critically injured, a 17-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman—suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The university reported that the suspect is not a student.

Virginia State University President Makola M. Abdullah thanked authorities for the arrest and emphasized ongoing safety measures, stating that the university remains committed to protecting its community as classes begin on Monday. The investigation is being led by Chesterfield County Police with assistance from the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Governor Abigail Spanberger expressed prayers for the victims.
