One dead and four injured in shooting at Lexington downtown park
A shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington left one person dead and four others, including a teenager and a child, wounded during a summer event.
Police said a gunfire incident at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington on Saturday evening resulted in five people being shot, with one victim later confirmed dead. Among the injured were a 14-year-old and a 4-year-old, as well as two adults who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers.
The identity of the deceased victim has not been released. Gun-violence prevention advocate Devine Carama, who was present at the scene, said she was within eight inches of a person who was shot while trying to protect four young people. She added that details of the investigation are still developing and described the attack as occurring during a peaceful, daylight event with women and children present.
"While trying to keep four young people covered and safe during the shooting, a person eight inches from me was shot tonight," Carama said. "Opening fire in a peaceful event, broad daylight, with women and children present is unacceptable," she added.
